Lives in her same town. Has a son she can still hold, and her whole life ahead of her. She can’t help looking for her: at the grocery store, at the gym, on social media. When Kelly just happens to bump into the single mother outside that pediatrician’s office, it’s simple curiosity getting the better of her.Their unlikely friendship brings Kelly a renewed sense of purpose—taking care of this young woman and her adorable baby boy. But that friendship quickly turns to obsession, and when one Kelly disappears, well, the other one may know why.

Book When I Was You: A Novel Review :

So, this was a hard book for me to objectively review, for personal reasons having nothing to do with the Author at all. And I have to say, I have it a 5 star review because I personally feel, the way the Author was able to create enough viable doubt regarding our main narrator, Kelly Medina(the original one.), yet also second guessing that doubt when she's able to relay interactions/discussions so clearly makes this a great Rollercoaster ride. I have always preferred books with unreliable narrators, they are always more fun for me and this had more than 1 of these. We have our main character whose life seems to become wrapped up completely in a young woman she barely knows who happens to share the same first and last name as hers, her curiosity peeked by a simple mistake by a Pediatrician's Office when they accidently call the wrong Kelly to confirm an upcoming checkup for an infant boy. We know it's a mistake, because we're told already that the original Kelly's son is in College. As she sets up an "accidental" random meeting with this mysterious woman who shares a name with her and is the Mother of an infant boy, we watch as she pretty aggressively ingratiates herself into young Kelly's and her infant son Sullivan's life. At first it's subtle but as she she sees signs of what she considers to be lazy parenting by the younger woman, she becomes more obsessed. At the same time, we learn through her husband's and Best Friend, that our main Kelly has recently suffered a trauma that has them doubting that this new, younger Kelly with the baby son even exists. It appears that she has made up 'Imaginary Friends' not so long ago. It was instantly clear to me what the trauma was and my heart went out to our narrator. Throughout the book, it's very easy to go back and forth in your belief of whether this other Kelly exists, because the Author doesn't only create reason for doubt but does so in a more realistic way than a lot of other books I've read. The reason for our doubts are based on something that could so easily inflict someone in our lives that we care about, yet there are enough scenes and interactions that feel very real when described by our Main Kelly. I had thought I had it all figured out.. But I only had SOME of it figured out at the end. The fact that the end could have been SOOO predictable that it offered no surprise or new insight yet despite that, it did, was what bumped it up to that last star for me. Yes, SOME of it was predictable, but there aspects that even I didn't see coming (which is rare, considering how many books I read). The author I feel plays on our empathies and our own secret fears as readers which is a genius tactic for taking a well used and read plot line and making it her own. I would definitely read another book by this Author... Highly recommend!!!!!
One morning Kelly Medina gets a call from her son’s pediatrician’s office confirming an appointment. Not out of the ordinary except that Kelly’s son is grown up and left for college. Kelly’s husband Rafael is a professor at a college a couple of hours away so only comes home on the weekends. So Kelly is definitely feeling very alone, so when she gets this call she cannot help wondering about this woman with her same name. Who is she? What is she like? Is her baby a boy or girl? So Kelly decides to “accidently” bump into the other Kelly in the parking lot of the pediatrician’s office. This meeting turns into a friendship and then an obsession.I don’t really want to say anything else because that would spoil it. I did figure out a couple of small details, But I had no idea what direction this book was going to go, the narration had me doubting everything I was reading and thinking . I will say I loved the direction it ended up taking. I was hooked from the very beginning. I think everything flowed so smoothly. This was a fast paced read, never a moment when I felt it dragged. I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen next. While I like how the book ended I would have loved to have a little bit more.
